Girlhood Charlotte was founded in early 2024 on a soccer field by two Charlotte mothers and longtime friends, Dr. Diep Nguyen, a board-certified pediatrician, and Mary Queen, a registered post-partum nurse and certified personal trainer. While their then-11-year-old daughters, Hannah and Becca, who had been best friends since preschool, were playing, they discussed the challenges each faced in having "the talk". Each girl had started puberty, but both Dr. Nguyen and Mary had been unsuccessful in initiating the important conversations needed to best prepare them. As medical professionals and mothers of girls, Dr. Nguyen and Mary recognize the importance of ensuring that discussions about puberty are guided by trusted adults and grounded in factual information. Inspired to foster a more approachable dialogue, Dr. Nguyen and Mary decided that a shared experience would be ideal. By cultivating a safe space for honest conversation and fun, they hoped their daughters would feel less awkward and nervous. What better way to learn, connect, and have fun than through a party? In a supportive and celebratory atmosphere, Dr. Nguyen and Mary envisioned a space where their daughters could explore the topic of puberty with greater confidence, curiosity, and ease alongside trusted friends and their mothers.
The first Girlhood Charlotte puberty party was held in March 2024 with their daughters and soccer teammates. Moms and daughters asked thoughtful questions, shared plenty of laughter, and learned more than they expected. More importantly, they experienced the transformative power of meaningful conversations, even when navigating sensitive topics. Rather than treating puberty as an uncomfortable subject, Dr. Nguyen and Mary encouraged honest discussions that normalize physical and emotional changes while strengthening the mother-daughter relationship. Through these shared conversations, deep connections were formed, leaving a lasting impact that continues today.
Since that first class, Girlhood Charlotte has expanded its capacity and broadened its mission. We have hosted dozens of classes across Charlotte and the surrounding areas, creating a one-of-a-kind experience for girls and their mothers. We are the only program that brings puberty education, reimagined as a fun and engaging "party," directly into your living room. To the delight of Dr. Nguyen and Mary, Hannah and Becca now occasionally join classes as guest teen instructors. These girls, who once approached puberty with nervousness and uncertainty, are now excited to share their knowledge and help normalize the changes they continue to experience throughout adolescence. Their journey is a powerful reminder of how honest conversations, education, and support can build confidence and connection.
Through engaging discussions, hands-on learning, practical resources, and compassionate guidance, Girlhood Charlotte is helping the next generation of girls navigate adolescence with knowledge, confidence, and a strong support system. We empower girls to grow from strong girls into even stronger women.

Growing up comes with a lot of changes—and just as many questions. At Girlhood Charlotte, we believe those conversations should begin with openness, honesty, and understanding. Through hands-on activities, age-appropriate education, and interactive conversations, we help girls feel informed, empowered, and comfortable asking questions. By learning alongside their moms, girls gain not only knowledge but also the confidence to continue these important conversations at home.

As both a board-certified pediatrician practicing within Charlotte and a mom of two, Dr. Nguyen understands that puberty is about much more than physical changes—it’s a time that calls for education, confidence, and open communication. Together with her lifelong friend and co-founder, Mary Queen, she created Girlhood Charlotte to provide girls and their mothers with a welcoming, judgment-free space to learn, ask questions, and grow together.
Dr. Nguyen is passionate about empowering girls to understand and embrace their changing bodies while helping families build the trust and communication that will support them far beyond the tween years. Through Girlhood Charlotte, she hopes every girl leaves feeling informed, confident, and proud of the young woman she is becoming.

My name is Hannah Jarrell and the daughter of Dr. Nguyen. After being a part of Girlhood, it has shaped the way I see my life as a girl in more ways than one. Maturing and growing during these years is such an empowering period and it unites us girls as one big community. We learn to love ourselves and our changing bodies, while also understanding the why and how. Being alongside my best friend and mom during this confusing time has been one of the greatest experiences. I have felt that depending on my loved ones has truly helped our bonds grow stronger. I have learned infinitely more about myself as a person, and I am so blessed to be able to share that gift with other young women.

My name is Becca Queen, and I am the youngest of Mama Queen's three daughters and currently in the 9th grade. I am honored to help and be a part of Girlhood. Watching this business grow has truly been amazing. I love watching younger girls learn about puberty and helping them accept that what they are going through is completely normal. My favorite part as a teen educator is when someone asks a big question and seeing the relief on their face knowing they understand the why, especially if they are a little nervous to ask. I enjoy being part of a space where everyone can talk openly and feel supported. It’s so cool seeing how girls gain confidence throughout the class as they learn. Helping with these classes has taught me a lot too. I have learned that what happens during puberty is natural and that your mom understands a lot more than you think. Having my mom as a role model and someone I can rely on has been so great. Also, being with my best friend, Hannah, as teen educators is amazing. Helping girls grow stronger together by feeling supported and confident in puberty is something I am really proud of as part of Girlhood!

Christie, mom of a Girlhood Charlotte graduate
“As a mom of 2 daughters, I have been looking for a class like this for over a year. Girlhood Charlotte was everything I was looking for and more. They provide instruction for the girls on what to expect with the upcoming changes their bodies will face while also ensuring they feel comfortable to talk about it in this intimate environment. Moms are engaged to tell their stories so that our daughters not only know that we have experienced all of this but feel comfortable coming to us throughout the process. There was laughter, a ton of knowledge, and interaction. While I wish this class would have been around many years ago for me, I am eternally grateful it is available now for my girls. Mary and Diep, you are doing amazing things for this generation of young women!”

“With Girlhood Charlotte, I learned a lot of the changes that my body will go through as I go through puberty and grow into a young woman. GHC also made it so we all knew that these changes are normal and each of our experiences will not be at the same time through puberty because we are all different. This experience is one I will never forget.”

“My favorite part was opening up the pad.
Mom, I’m going to wear a pad tomorrow for school just in case.”
